Custom Pet Portraits
How It Works
It is an honor to be trusted to capture the likeness and personality of your beloved pet. With every painting, it is my goal to highlight the unique characteristics and attributes that make them special, and above all, I want to help bring your vision to life.
I will use the information and images you provide in the contact form below to create your pet’s unique portrait. Please refer to the pricing table and FAQ for specific questions. Once you’re ready to order, fill out the contact form below, in as much detail as possible. I will contact you via email within 24 hours to initiate the next steps. I charge a 20% deposit which will be applied to the total cost; this invoice will be sent via Square. Once that’s out of the way, it’s time for the magic to happen!
I prefer to work from a single reference photo (please see FAQ below to learn what makes a good reference photo). This allows me to achieve as close of a likeness to your pet as possible. If for any reason you’re not able to take a photo or you don’t have one available, please send several photos of your pet. I will evaluate on a case-by-case basis whether I can provide an accurate portrait based on the images you provide.
If you have any additional questions, please feel free to send me an email at [email protected]

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a good reference picture?
I like to paint exactly what I see for the truest representation of your pet, so a good reference image is the key to a good portrait. Pictures taken with the camera straight on or slightly above are best, focusing on the face of the animal. The subject should be well-lit and in focus. Please provide images that are high resolution.
A good reference image is:
- In focus
- High resolution
- Well lit so I can see all the details
- At a flattering angle that does not distort the pet’s features – ideally head-on or slightly above
A good reference image is not:
- Too dark to see details
- Cutting off part of your pet’s face or ears. If I can’t see something, I may not be able to paint the subject accurately.
- Taken from an unusual or unflattering angle (unless that’s what you want)
If I don't have a good picture of my pet, can you still create a portrait?
This is a decision I make on a case by case basis. Please send me the images you have, and let me know if you have a favorite. I’ll always do my best to portray your pet as accurately as possible, but be aware that if I need to use multiple reference images, some of the likeness may be lost.
How long does a pet portrait take?
Please allow up to 6 weeks from our first communication. Depending on how long the pre-painting phase takes it could take more or less time. Oil also takes days or weeks to fully dry. I will always communicate with you if I expect a change in the time frame.
Do you accept returns or provide refunds?
I do not accept returns or provide refunds. I will work hard to communicate with you every step of the way to make sure the painting looks as you had imagined. In the unlikely event that a painting is lost or destroyed in the shipping process, I will either refund or create a replacement piece.
How much does it cost?
Please refer to the pricing table above.
Can I make special requests?
Yes! It’s my goal to make your portrait reflect the personality of your pet. If you have a unique idea, please let me know! whether it’s adding clothing or accessories or a special background, I’ll do my best to accommodate.
Do you provide a preliminary sketch?
If I am painting from a single photo, I do not typically provide a preliminary sketch. However, if you provide several reference images and I piece them together, I will provide a rough sketch at no additional charge.
Can you paint multiple pets?
I’m happy to paint a portrait with multiple pets. A 20% fee will be charged per additional pet. Some sizes, specifically squares will not work well for multiple pets. Typically, I’d recommend a landscape orientation for multiple subjects so they can all fit comfortably within the piece.
Testimonials
“Krista has painted three pet portraits for me, two of my own dogs and one as a gift. I cannot recommend her enough. In fact, I recommend her to everyone I know! She listens to you and has a gift for really showing off their personalities on a canvas. She will forever by my go-to artist!“
– Hallie V.
“Krista painted a picture of our new furry family member, our dog Cooper. She was fantastic at making sure she created the painting like we wanted and communicated with us throughout the process. What was even more impressive was her ability to capture Cooper’s playful expression and personality in her picture. Tongue sticking out and all! Our painting now hangs in our room and is pawtastic!“
– Ben & Abby W.
I love creating unique and fun portraits that really help capture the essence of your beloved pets! If you have a great idea – perhaps your cat dressed as a queen, your dog in a military uniform, let me know! I can try to make it happen for you.
